焊接材料焊錫作為所有三種級(jí)別的連接：裸片(die)、包裝(package)和電路板裝配的連接材料。焊錫可以有各種物理形式使用，包括錫條、錫錠、錫線(xiàn)、錫粉、預(yù)制錠、錫球與柱、錫膏和熔化狀態(tài)。焊錫材料的固有特性可從三個(gè)方面考慮：物理、冶金和機(jī)械。
人們都認(rèn)識(shí)到焊錫點(diǎn)的可靠性不僅依靠?jī)?nèi)在的特性，而且依靠設(shè)計(jì)、要裝配的元件與板、用以形成焊接點(diǎn)的過(guò)程和長(zhǎng)期使用的環(huán)境。還有，焊接點(diǎn)表現(xiàn)的特性 是有別于散裝的焊錫材料。因此，一些已建立的散裝焊錫與焊接點(diǎn)之間的機(jī)械及溫度特性可能不完全相同。
元件與板的設(shè)計(jì)也會(huì)對(duì)焊錫點(diǎn)特性有重要影響。例如，和焊盤(pán)有聯(lián)系的阻焊的設(shè)計(jì)(如限定的或非限定的阻焊)，將影響焊錫點(diǎn)的性能以及失效機(jī)制。 對(duì)每一種元件包裝類(lèi)型，觀(guān)察和介定各自的焊接點(diǎn)失效模式。
在固化期間造成大量異相晶核座，以及當(dāng)焊錫點(diǎn)形成時(shí)元素或冶金成分的濃度變化。任何一種情況都可能導(dǎo)致反應(yīng)缺乏均勻性的結(jié)構(gòu)。隨著焊錫點(diǎn)厚度的減少，這種界面 衰歇將更明顯。因此，焊接點(diǎn)的特性可能改變，失效機(jī)制可能與從散裝的焊錫得出的不一樣。
