鋁和鋁合金可以用各種不同的方法熔煉。常使用的是無芯感應(yīng)爐和槽式感應(yīng)爐、坩堝爐和反射式平爐（使用天然氣或燃料油燃燒）以及電阻爐和電熱輻射爐。爐料種類廣泛，從高質(zhì)量的預(yù)合金化鑄錠一直到專門由低等級廢料構(gòu)成的爐料都可以使用。然而，即使在最適宜熔煉澆注的條件下，熔化的鋁也易受三種類型的不良影響：

為了防止在鑄件中形成氧化膜，則需要讓金屬以毫尤紊流的狀態(tài)進(jìn)入到鑄型的型腔．對大多數(shù)鑄件來說，利用重力澆注的方法就不可能做到這一點(diǎn)，因為直澆道的水頭高度會加快流動速度從而發(fā)生紊流，所以一定要采用反重力法或液位模具澆注技術(shù)。這樣過濾器減緩金屬流動的速度，使其慢到足以防止氧化物產(chǎn)生。另外必須從底部注入模具的型腔，注入鑄件各個液位的次序電要精心設(shè)計好，以免發(fā)生“瀑布”——模具中液態(tài)金屬從較高液位掉落到較低的液位，從而在新生金屬表面形成氧化物。利用從底部注入模具的方法，液態(tài)金屬頂上的氧化層將升入到上砂箱層面的頂部并流入冒口的頂，這樣則不會損害鑄件。
很多鑄鋁合金都含有像鎂這樣的會慢慢與氧氣發(fā)生反應(yīng)的元素，熔化的金屬保存時間過長，這些元素就會被逐漸氧化，導(dǎo)致鑄件的化學(xué)成分不達(dá)標(biāo)，而其他一些合金元素，例如具有低氣化壓的鋅，還會從浴槽的表而蒸發(fā)。
